Long-term tsetse and trypanosomiasis management options in West Africa
نویسنده
چکیده
Tsetse transmitted animal trypanosomiasis (T&T) is a complex disease that directly and indirectly impacts Africa’s crop and livestock agriculture. This awareness has generated over the past decade a drive and political will towards solving the problem at the continental scale. In his paper the authors use state of he art spatial tools to study how, for West Africa, the variety of agro-ecological settings may impact decision support towards that goal.

Is vector control needed to eliminate gambiense human African trypanosomiasis?
INTRODUCTION Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, is a neglected tropical parasitic disease of humans due to trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) in sub-Saharan Africa. Comparable diseases (Animal African Trypanosomiasis—AAT—nagana) are present in domesticated animals and these are an important constraint to animal health and production in Africa (Jorda...
متن کاملA Review of Ecological Factors Associated with the Epidemiology of Wildlife Trypanosomiasis in the Luangwa and Zambezi Valley Ecosystems of Zambia
Trypanosomiasis has been endemic in wildlife in Zambia for more than a century. The disease has been associated with neurological disorders in humans. Current conservation strategies by the Zambian government of turning all game reserves into state-protected National Parks (NPs) and game management areas (GMAs) have led to the expansion of the wildlife and tsetse population in the Luangwa and Z...
متن کاملTrypanotolerance in cattle and prospects for the control of trypanosomiasis by selective breeding.
Tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis is one of the major constraints on the expansion of the livestock and agricultural industries in Africa. The disease affects animals and man, with direct and indirect losses estimated in billions of dollars annually. Because of the phenomenon of antigenic variation, no vaccine is available. Current prophylactic efforts must rely on tsetse control by the use of...
متن کاملInfection rates in sterile males of morsitans, palpalis and fusca groups Glossina for pathogenic Trypanosoma species from East and West Africa.
Infection rates in sterile male Glossina morsitans centralis, G. austeni, G. palpalis palpalis, G.p. gambiensis, G. fuscipes fuscipes, G. tachinoides and G. brevipalpis for Trypanosoma vivax, T. congolense and T. brucei isolated from East and West Africa, were studied. Five groups of the sterile males, together with the five groups of sexually fertile males, of each of the respective species an...
متن کاملTsetse fly control and trypanosomiasis in Africa, quo vadis?
National and international efforts to eradicate tsetse fly-borne human and animal trypanosomiasis are critically evaluated, and possible reasons for their failure in many cases are discussed. Some formerly performed campaigns in specific areas with positive results cannot be taken as examples to solve the main problems. In future, a significant reduction of trypanosomiasis cases will be possibl...
